It’s not easy to be in a relationship in the limelight – just ask the A-listers whose dating lives are in the public eye.

Celebrity breakups are by nature more complicated than they are for regular couples for a host of reasons, whether it’s conflicting filming or performing schedules or having to divide up costly assets or intellectual property from projects they worked on together.

While 2024 saw several new celebrity couples step into the spotlight – from Meryl Streep and Martin Short to Paul Mescal and Gracie Abrams – several high-profile couples also announced they were splitting up in recent months.

Here are 10 of the celebrity break-ups that made headlines this year.

Just two years after their lavish Georgia wedding, it was revealed that Jennifer Lopez had filed for divorce from Ben Affleck.

The couple first tied the knot in Las Vegas on July 16, 2022, but held a more traditional ceremony on August 20 that year.

Affleck and Lopez met in 2001, announcing their engagement the very next year. Days before the wedding was set to take place, the couple announced that they were postponing the ceremony over “excessive media attention”.

That postponement lasted 20 years, with each going on to marry other people and have children before they reunited in 2021.

Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury announced in August that they were splitting up five years after meeting on Love Island UK.

The pair, who coupled up on the 2019 series of the reality dating show, got engaged last year and have a daughter together named Bambi.

Hague shared a statement on her Instagram story confirming the split and telling her followers she would be taking a social media break amid the news, writing, “I am extremely upset to announce that mine and Tommy’s relationship has come to an end.

“I will forever be grateful for the most important thing to me now and always, my beautiful daughter. Without us there would be no her, she will always be my priority.”

“We won’t be commenting further on this, and really appreciate your respect and privacy at this time.”

In March this year, the Herald reported that Kiwi acting sensation K.J. Apa and his French model girlfriend Clara Berry had broken up after four years together.

According to Berry, the couple, who welcomed their son Sasha in September 2021 would share custody 50/50.

She admitted at the time that the arrangement was “hard to accept”, telling a fan on TikTok, “I am not with my son 50% of the time and therefore won’t know 50% of his life.”
