Sarah Pollok, Multimedia Journalist at New Zealand’s Herald, specialises in covering stories around travel, travelling as close as Waiheke and far as Ecuador for work.
I first fell in love with journalism in 2016 after discovering the world of long-form lifestyle features; a genre that didn’t just work with facts and figures but stories and colour too. Every week I’d look forward to getting my hands on the Saturday Canvas mag or Tuesday Travel. It took a few years to get from a lecture hall desk to a desk at NZ Herald and during that time, I studied in Oxford and graduated from AUT, studied postgrad photography in Melbourne and had a brief career in social media advertising. I freelanced for the Herald every moment I could and jumped at the chance to join the travel team (ironically, just before Auckland’s 3-month lockdown). Fortunately, the world is opening up again and it’s been incredible to travel to places as close as Waiheke and far as Ecuador for work. When I’m not working, you’ll almost certainly find me reading a never-ending list of books and articles over a black coffee, taking photographs of my beautiful friends, or chipping away on some personal piece for my sub stack newsletter (like every other Gen Z/millennial).
