An American Airlines spokesman says the aircraft that crashed this morning in New York was a French-built Airbus A300-600, one of 35 A300s owned by American Airlines.
It went into service with American Airlines as a new aircraft in July 1988.
The plane was equipped with two General Electric engines.
It had a major overhaul in December 1999 and its next major overhaul was scheduled for July 2002.
