WATCHING a young child drool over toys in The Warehouse as his mum pulled him away, saying rather loudly "Santa won't be coming this year", it really hit home that this time of year can be painful for many people.
You could see the failure she felt in her face. I wanted to cry.
And then there was the Masterton Santa Parade - hundreds of expectant children lining the streets hoping to get a glimpse of the jolly fat man. Many of these children will wake on Christmas morning hungry and with nothing under the tree - not even a lump of coal.
Most people are struggling just to put bread and butter on the table and Christmas only rubs home to these people their plight - and it's not good news.
But we are a generous, caring community though.
