A High Court judge has dismissed a new bid to compel a former Herald journalist to reveal the names of confidential sources.
Lawyer Rob Weir applied to the High Court in Auckland for a judicial review of an order made by two justices of the peace that journalist John Andrews did not have to name police officers who gave him information.
Justice Robert Fisher dismissed the proceedings yesterday and told Mr Weir that the hearing "immediately ran off the rails" because he had not made the correct application.
Mr Weir submitted that the JPs had made an error of law and acted unreasonably in deciding that Andrews did not have to reveal his sources.
Andrews, a former chief reporter at the Herald who now works as a freelance journalist, was called before the Waitakere District Court in March and April and asked to name his sources.
Suppression orders prevented coverage of the case.
