Multiple crashes cause gridlock on Northern Motorway

A four-car crash on Auckland's northern motorway is causing delays to traffic heading out of the city for the long weekend.

Police said the vehicles crashed in the right-most northbound lane near Tristram Ave on the North Shore about 11.15am.

Inspector Andy Brill of police northern communications said motorists could expect delays while the vehicles were cleared.

"The original crash was in lane three, but obviously with the tow trucks and what have you, it will be causing congestion on all lanes."

Four people were assessed by ambulance staff, some of whom were taken to North Shore Hospital with moderate injuries, an ambulance spokesman said.

The crash comes on the first day of the Auckland Anniversary long weekend, as many Aucklanders look to head out of the city.

Delays from the crash could also affect people heading to the NZ International Air Show, which begins today at the North Shore Airfield in Dairy Flat.

Mr Brill said traffic was heavy but there were no reports of major congestion apart from around the crash.

He called on motorists to be patient.

"Take it easy and if you're going north, try the State Highway 16 route," Mr Brill said.

There was often congestion around Warkworth, so SH16 would be "a much smoother and more enjoyable ride".
