MILWAUKEE - The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit on yesterday NZT alleging that retailer Target Corporation discriminated against African Americans by not hiring them for entry-level management jobs in some Wisconsin stores.
The suit, filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, claims that Target violated civil rights laws that forbid discrimination in recruitment and hiring based on race.
A spokesman for Target said the company is currently awaiting details and additional information on the lawsuit.
The EEOC alleges that Target employees routinely destroyed applications of African Americans and of people who attended minority job fairs at Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The suit also seeks relief for a class of African American job-seekers who were not hired between January 2000 and the present.
Target, the seventh largest US retailer, operates 1,381 discount and department stores. Its shares closed up 48 cents at $US42.48 on the New York Stock Exchange.
