"Education is a big part of my family," she said.
Mrs Mason replaced longtime principal Frazer Mailman, who spent more than 20 years in the role.
She visited the school before she applied for the position, and was impressed.
"When I walked around and saw what was happening in the classrooms and talking with Frazer, I thought 'I would love to work here'," she said.
"It's nice to know that you're coming into a place that's got a good reputation."
She is also an active netball player, and understands the importance of teamwork.
After the departure of deputy principal Russell Thompson, she has the support of two acting deputy principals Darren Kerr and Jane Milne.
Her first day on the job was on Tuesday, and she said it was a "great day".
"I was still nervous because I wanted to make a good impression," she said.
Mrs Mason had a "spontaneous and impromptu" welcome at an assembly towards the end of last term, and has found everybody welcoming and friendly.
She said it was still too early to set future directions for the school and she would like to know what the school community thinks.
"I've said to the staff I'm very interested in what their ideas are for the future vision of the school," she said.
She is glad to have secured the role, and is looking forward to working alongside talented staff and students.
"I'm very passionate about what I do and for me this is a huge commitment.
"We're looking forward to being part of the community and making a positive contribution," she said.
