Cricket: South Africa lead NZ, Oram scores maiden test century

South Africa were 134 for three in their second innings after the fourth day of the first cricket test here today, giving them an overall lead of 84 over New Zealand.

The tourists were being led out of danger by star batsman Jacques Kallis, who was unbeaten on 56 at the close alongside Neil McKenzie on 11.

South Africa, who trailed by 50 in the first innings, were in trouble at 16 for two after the early departure of captain Graeme Smith and Jacques Rudolph.

But Kallis and Herschelle Gibbs added 92 for the third wicket before Gibbs was caught behind down the leg side for 47 to give spinner Paul Wiseman his first wicket.

Earlier, New Zealand were dismissed for 509, their highest total against South Africa, with Jacob Oram topscoring with his maiden test century, 119 not out.

Shaun Pollock took the last two wickets to end with four for 98 and draw level with Allan Donald's South African test wicket-taking record of 330.
