A rare white kiwi chick that has hatched at Pukaha Mount Bruce in Wairarapa is believed to be the first of its kind ever bred in captivity.
The chick, named Manukura by iwi authority Rangitane o Wairarapa, was hatched on May 1 and was the thirteenth of fourteen kiwis successfully hatched
at Pukaha Mount Bruce this breeding season.
Manukura is not an albino but the rare progeny of kiwi that were transferred to Pukaha from Hauturu/Little Barrier Island last year.
Bob Francis, Pukaha Mount Bruce Board chairman said Manukura is the first all-white chick to be hatched in captivity "as far as we know".
