Auckland police are investigating the second incident in two weeks in which an object from the Stamford Plaza construction site fell several storeys into an inner-city street.
VIP Cabs driver Slava Kolossov had parked his Ford Fairmont on a taxi rank when a piece of wood landed on
his bonnet opposite the site on Albert St about 3.15pm yesterday.
Police said the building site's manager was on his way to Auckland police station to report an earlier incident in which a piece of alu-minium had fallen from the site.
Fellow cab driver Sunny Malhotra said he was parked behind his colleague's taxi when he heard the "loud bang" of the wood hitting the car.
"He was lucky. It could have hit in his driver's window and it's got nails."
Fletcher Construction site manager Arthur Jones told the Herald he believed a scaffolder had lost a piece of timber. He was not sure how far the wood had fallen and an internal investigation would follow.
Police at the scene said Mr Jones had "done the right thing" by reporting the earlier incident to police of his own free will.
While he had taken responsibility, police would make inquiries to ensure safety procedures were in place.
