Planes are still landing on the east-west runway.
Two occupants of the plane are safe with no injuries, a police spokesperson said.
An airport spokeswoman said the aircraft at the centre of this afternoon's incident had been removed from the runway and transported to nearby secure storage.
"The aircraft had a mechanical issue and landed with its wheels up at 12.20pm, just south of the intersection of the airport's two runways.
"The two people on board at the time are both safe.
"The airport remained open and continued to operate, with only one transtasman aircraft diverted", which eventually returned to Christchurch.
