Big Latch On proves to be big catch on

Outrageous Fortune actress Nicole Whippy "felt like crying" when she saw the large turnout at an event celebrating breastfeeding.

The second-time mum, who played Kasey on the West Auckland-based show, took part in the Big Latch On -- an event that saw women around the country "latch on" simultaneously today.

The Women's Health Network event was a part of World Breastfeeding Week and aimed to normalise breast feeding as part of every-day life.

Ms Whippy, who also played Michelle in Nothing Trivial, joined 38 other mums in "latching on" at a Te Atatu cafe. "I felt like crying when I saw how many people were here," she said. "I would have been happy with 20 people turning up... That's boob power right there."

Ms Whippy has a seven month old, Vida, and a six year old, Pearl.

She said she brought Vida to the Big Latch On because there was too many people who didn't accept breastfeeding.

"There's still a lot of people that think it's wrong to breastfeed in a public place," she said.

"If you have a problem with it, you should be the one that leaves because it's a human right.

"It shouldn't even be referred to as 'feeding in public', it should just be referred to as 'breastfeeding' because that's what it is."

The Big Latch on started in New Zealand ten years ago and now has about 30 countries take part.
