An American family have had a surprise package land in their backyard - a baby shark.

A CBS6 News report says the young shark fell from the sky and landed on a concrete path in the Virginia Beach family's backyard on Friday last week.

The mother, Sue Bowser, told CBS6 it was likely killed by an osprey that dropped the 33cm dogfish shark into their yard as it flew overhead.

"There's a little mark on his side where the talons probably went in, and it's a little bloody on the side where the talons had poked him."

The family have put the shark, which typically resides in nearby coastal waters, in their garage freezer.

"I would like to preserve the shark because a lot of people have asked about it and I just think it's so unique," Mrs Bowser told CBS6.

She also plans to show it off to family visiting from out of town in coming weeks.
