Jakarta Stock Exchange floor collapses

The second floor of the Indonesia Stock Exchange building has collapsed, injuring around a dozen people who were carried on stretches from the building.

"The second floor of the building has collapsed," said Vindy, a personal assistant to the exchange's President Director Tito Sulistio, who was in the building at the time.

Police were cordoning off the two-tower, multi-storey building.

Footage aired on local television MetroTV showed several people lying on the ground at the entrance of the building.

Images circulating on social media showed a mangled metal structure that had collapsed around a Starbucks cafe near the entrance to the lobby.

Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono said hundreds of students were visiting the stock exchange at the time.

According to ABC correspondent Adam Harvey, who is at the scene of the incident, the ceiling of the building's lobby fell onto the reception area, where a coffee shop sits. People in the lobby were hit by falling masonry, he reported.

Director of the stock exchange Alpino Kianjaya declined to comment on the incident. Markets are currently in midday break and are scheduled to reopen at 1.30pm local time.

There was no immediate explanation for the collapse.
