Obituary: Dame Mary Donaldson

Dame Mary Donaldson, the first woman to serve as Lord Mayor of London, has died aged 82 after a short illness.

Dame Mary was Lord Mayor of London from 1983 to 1984 and a member of the Press Complaints Commission from 1991 to 1995.

She played a leading part in the ethical and medical debate around pioneering IVF treatment in Britain as chairwoman of the Interim Licensing Authority for Human In Vitro Fertilisation and Embryology.
