Tennis: Davenport sidelined with knee injury

World No 1 Lindsay Davenport, of the United States, has withdrawn from the adidas International tennis tournament in Sydney next week after not recovering from a knee injury.

Davenport injured her knee at the WTA championships in Munich in October. Her manager, Tony Godsick, contacted Sydney tournament director Craig Watson to inform him of her withdrawal.

"He [Godsick] said the injury Lindsay sustained to her knee during her semifinal match at the championships in Munich had not yet healed 100 per cent," Watson said.

Davenport still hoped to play in the Australian Open, starting on January 14 in Melbourne.
