Soccer: France edge closer to top

France have closed the gap on world champions Brazil at the top of Fifa's world rankings following Confederations Cup wins over Colombia, Japan and New Zealand.

The European champions move to within 20 points of Brazil, who failed to reach the semifinals of the controversial tournament in France after losing to Cameroon and drawing with Turkey.

The Turks, Cameroon and Colombia climb the rankings after making the last four at the cup. Turkey rise to seventh, the African champions to 16th and the South Americans leap 17 places to 22nd.

Argentina and the Netherlands move up one position to fourth and fifth respectively, with Germany dropping to sixth. New Zealand slip from 51st to 53rd.
