One of the world's most picturesque thoroughbred stud farms is for sale.
New Zealand thoroughbred breeders of the year David and Masey Benjamin have put the 132ha Fayette Park Stud at Tirau on the market because of health reasons and estate planning.
David Benjamin has suffered ill-health for several years and the
couple have owned the multimillion-dollar estate for 16 years.
They will sell their entire weanling crop unreserved at New Zealand Bloodstock's autumn sale at Karaka in May, and all but two of their broodmares unreserved at the spring bloodstock sale in August.
They are continuing discussions with the owners and syndicates of four stallions which stood at Fayette Park, including AJC Derby winner and $3.6 million yearling purchase Don Eduardo.
"I've just been looking at a photo of the place with the words 'up for international tender' beside it and I get very emotional," said David Benjamin.
"But we've made the decision, and I just hope someone buys it and loves it like we have.
"It won't be easy for the family to leave this behind, but we have to take our personal lives into consideration."
Fayette Park Stud is bordered on three sides by the trout fishing Waihou River, Oraka River and the outlet from the stream from Lake Okoroire.
"I've been on the farm all day, looking at the trees and hedges, and all the work we've put into this place," he said.
"We'll miss this place terribly because it has meant a tremendous amount to us. It's been the fulfilment of a dream."
His family would remain in the industry after a 32-year involvement, but on a much smaller scale.
"We'll go back to being horse-breeders. The passion is still there to breed that good horse."
Fayette Park Stud has three times been nominated for breeders of the year, last year winning the title through the deeds of group one winners Hail, Bodie and Elevenses.
Benjamin said last season's achievements were among the most satisfying of his career.
