EVIAN MASTERS
(France)
Australian Karrie Webb is four shots off the lead after the first round yesterday.
Pat Hurst, a 38-year-old veteran, fellow-American Brittany Lincicome and Ji Eun-Hee, one of the huge crop of talented young South Koreans, shared the first-round lead on six-under-par 66.
Another two Koreans, Bae Kyeong and Hon Jin Joo, and the US Solheim Cup player, Christina Kim, were all a shot behind on 67 on a day when 25 players managed to break par.
Webb, the defending champion, was relatively happy with an opening 70 that put her one ahead of two-time former winner Annika Sorenstam, while Mexico's world No.1 Lorena Ochoa had to birdie the final two holes to salvage a 72.
Michelle Wie, the 17-year-old who has struggled all season with a wrist injury, showed glimpses of the form that saw her finish second here for the past two years.
She birdied the sixth and seventh and the only real blemish in 73 was an out of bounds shot and a double-bogey at the par four 12th.
