Melville United bundled last year's beaten finalists Tauranga City United out of the Chatham Cup in Hamilton today.
Melville, who are third from bottom in the northern premier league, came from 1-0 down at halftime to win the second round tie 2-1 after a golden goal, three minutes from the end
of extra time.
Garry Board was a hero-turned-villain for the national league wooden spooners. Board expertly took advantage of chaos in the Melville defence to give Tauranga a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.
After Melville's Steven Holloway scored the equaliser in the 55th minute, the match was settled by a Board indiscretion in extra time.
Board went into the back of Melville midfielder Stu Watene. Referee Stephen Fletcher awarded a penalty, and Holloway calmly sent Tauranga goalkeeper Richard Pedley the wrong way from the penalty spot.
Tauranga ended regulation time with 10 men after centre back Craig Flowerday was sent off for a second bookable offence late in the second half.
Melville coach Paul Nixon was naturally thrilled at the result.
"Sometimes soccer isn't about nice passing and cultured play, it's just about blood and snot," Nixon said. "Our will to win today was just so great."
