Meat company PPCS has launched easy-cook venison cuts in southern supermarkets, but North Island gourmets will have to wait for supply lines to be established.
Medallion steaks and stir-fry pieces went on sale in Pak'N Save and New World stores in the South Island this week through the Foodstuffs
distribution network, in 400gm packs for $9.95c and $8.95 respectively.
The meat company, which has previously sent all its venison overseas but has run into weaker export prices in recent years, hopes to establish a similar distribution deal in the North Island soon but cannot say when.
Although venison from other sources is not new to supermarkets, its appearance has been sporadic because exports took priority.
But PPCS says it is committed to continuity of local supply under its Foodstuffs deal, even though deer farmers appear to be culling herds in response to lower export returns.
Marketing manager Glenn Tyrrell said the retail packs would include recipes to ensure the lean meat was not overcooked, and that householders could enjoy gourmet meals with little fuss. The prices would also help to make venison more accessible.
