A university student who fell asleep on the bus was later stripped naked in a Porirua robbery, police say.
Detective Dave Jones said the 19-year-old man fell asleep on a late bus from Courtenay Place, central Wellington, early on Sunday morning.
When the man awoke, he found himself in the Porirua suburb
of Titahi Bay, where he got off the bus and started walking home to Tawa.
At 3.45am, on Titahi Bay Rd near Tangere Drive, he was approached by a group of men who beat and robbed him.
Mr Jones said the offenders - believed to number between three and five - stole the man's wallet, cash and mobile phone. They also forced him to strip and then took his clothes.
The naked man was found soon after by a passing police patrol. He had suffered bruising and cuts to his face.
Mr Jones said one person took a more prominent part in the attack than the others. He was described as a Polynesian or Maori aged between 16 and 20, about 1.75 metres tall, of slim to medium build, with black short to medium-length hair.
