HAMILTON - A 9-year-old South Waikato boy will show his true colours at tomorrow's Ranfurly Shield Mooloo Parade in Hamilton after winning a bet with his father to do so.
When the Gaby family of Litchfield were deciding what colour to paint their Morris 1100 last year, young
Keegan suggested a Mooloo scheme - red, black and yellow stripes.
But fearing that the gaudy car would attract too much attention, his father Richard said the colour scheme would only come about if the Waikato rugby team were still holding the shield at the end of the year.
As a fierce Waikato supporter - and not wanting his sister's suggestion of a black and white paint job to win - Keegan readily took the bet.
"Well, Waikato kept the shield, of course, so the rest is history," said Mr Gaby.
The car now sports Mooloo colours and has already played a part as a supporter at the Wanganui shield challenge in Tokoroa on July 22.
It will feature in the Mooloo Parade tomorrow as part of the buildup to the Waikato-Northland clash.
The parade, the first of the season, starts at midday and will travel along Victoria St to Rugby Park.
More than 20 floats and vehicles will take part, including the Hamilton and Hastings Salvation Army Bands.
Waikato Rugby Union parade coordinator Trish McKay said that while 20 entrants was a good turnout for the first parade, she would expect to have twice as many floats later in the season.
