Hundreds of residents, still in the dark after last week's stormy weather, may be without power for another two nights.
Electricity lines company Orion today said fewer than 2000 customers, mainly in the rural community west of Christchurch, still had no electricity in their homes.
Initially, 28,000 customers had their
power supply knocked out in Tuesday night's gale force winds. Orion chief executive Rob Jamieson said it would likely take until Tuesday to restore supply to the remaining customers.
"Progress at reducing the number without power is quite slow now as many of the repairs we are completing take a few hours to fix but only bring on a few customers at a time.
Contractors from throughout the South Island and Wellington have been assisting us for the last couple of days and more have arrived from Dunedin today.''
