When English tourists Wendy Griffin and Stephen Bauer saw a geyser pop up right in front of their eyes in Rotorua they couldn't believe their luck.
However, what looked like a geyser bursting from the ground near the geothermally volatile Kuirau Park, turned out to be nothing more than a burst
water main.
It wasn't just the tourists who were fooled when the "geyser" on Tarewa Rd was reported.
Given the volatile nature of the area, police also expected something a little bit more exciting than the burst main.
Constable Richard Collier, of Rotorua police, said two patrols raced to the area.
"You know what the area around here is like," referring to the geothermal activity in the area.
Despite discovering it was just a burst water pipe, the English tourists took the opportunity to get a few snaps anyway. Back home, they figured, nobody would know the difference.
