Friends of a 20-year-old Christchurch woman who died after being hit by a car at the weekend have paid tribute to her in a roadside shrine.
A handmade white cross and flowers mark the spot where Elizabeth Hart was struck on Fendalton Road shortly after midnight on Saturday
as she left a friend's 21st birthday party, The Press reported.
A lamppost nearby bears felt-tip messages from friends .
Among the black marker dedications were: "We'll remember you for ever", "It's better to burn out than to fade away", and "I'm gonna miss your smiling face".
St Andrew's School rector, Christine Leighton, said Ms Hart had attended the school in 2003 and 2004.
"It's such a tragedy," she said.
"She was a talented and dedicated soccer player who played in the school's first 11 team. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family."
Michael James Bensley, an 18-year-old builder, was yesterday remanded in Christchurch District Court to appear in connection with Miss Hart's death.
He faces a charge of dangerous driving causing death and will appear on June 30.
