When the end of school bell rings, Rowena Tan and Shaniel Kumar can often be found at a school stall selling eco-friendly, reusable shopping bags.
The 13-year-olds, both in Year 8 at Baverstock Oaks School, are members of the school's enviro-team and they're so dedicated to the sustainability cause that they are jokingly called the enviro-police.
Funds raised from the sale of the $2 bags help environmentally friendly projects. Two thousand have been sold since September.
The team is led by environmental education teacher Shane Ross.
The team and the rest of the school pupils were involved in introducing a huge range of clean and green activities this year, including getting a commercial worm farm, setting up eight organic vegetable beds, introducing litterless lunches, cutting waste by more than 60 per cent and planting 300 native plants, selected to attract native birds.
"It's part of a package of building a sustainable future," said principal Mary Wilson.
"In fact, our parent community - jokingly - will talk about their children being the enviro-police."
The huge steps the Botany school made will be recognised this week, when it receives a silver Enviroschools award.
