Napier police dog Fi is alive and well.
Senior Constable Grant Diver's drug dog, a five-year-old German Shepherd, was thought to have been killed or badly hurt in the shooting at on the city's "hill" yesterday.
But police reported tonight the animal was rescued from the back of a police
vehicle at the gunman's property in Chaucer Rd, tonight.
Specialist staff were able to reach the dog van shortly before 10.30pm and found "a very much alive" Fi, Superintendent Russell Gibson said in a statement.
Mr Gibson said Fi didn't appear to be hurt, but was off to a vet tonight for a check-up.
No other details were immediately available.
Meanwhile, police said Mr Diver, shot yesterday, is an improving condition in hospital
He is now classified as "serious but stable" and has been moved from intensive care into a medical ward at Hawke's Bay Hospital.
