From Thursday recreational fishers will be able to take up to 250 oysters a day in the outer Bay of Islands and the outer Whangaruru Harbour after the Fisheries Ministry lifted its ban today.
Senior fisheries advisor Dave Allen said the original intent of the regulation, which closed the area to protect the native rock oyster, was no longer serving its purpose.
"However the pacific oyster has become quite abundant in these areas over more recent decades. The revocation of this old regulation will allow recreational fishers to opportunity to access the available oyster resource," Mr Allen said in a statement.
