Police say gruesome autopsy photographs of a man slashed to death in Otara almost 13 years ago that have turned up on the internet are unlikely to have come from the original case files.
Three graphic photos showing machete wounds to victim David Fuko have been posted on a website specialising in macabre images from around the world. Mr Fuko was slashed to death by a gang of men at the Otara shopping centre in 1988.
The website posted the photos along with comments about the source of the pictures.
"They were dug out of a dumpster somewhere in Auckland, New Zealand; and are police evidence photos of an axe and machete hacking."
National crime manager Detective Superintendent Bill Bishop said the photos had probably come from some of the many copies issued as evidence at the time of the trial.
