Police have been notified after hackers defaced the National Party website over the weekend.
It was thought the website was attacked on Friday night, senior press secretary Jason Ede told NZPA.
He said there was nothing to link the hackers to a particular political party.
"We wouldn't make that allegation at all."
Defaced image files on the website bore messages attacking National leader Don Brash for his race relations stance, he said.
He refused to confirm the hackers had labelled Dr Brash a racist.
The website was out of action today.
"It is down while we are conducting a security review," Mr Ede said. "Our comment is simply it's amazing how far people will go to stifle debate.
"Our (information technology) people say it is very rare for people to do something like that and not leave footprints. The police have been notified."
Also at the weekend, the North Shore electorate office of National Party MP Wayne Mapp was burgled and vandalised.
A dry powder fire extinguisher was emptied throughout the office, affecting the operation of computer equipment.
The office was shut for the day, Mr Mapp told NZPA.
His feeling was that it was not a politically motivated break-in, he said.
"They smashed a few windows, drunk a bit of beer, accessed the odd porn site. It feels like vandalism when you add it all up."
Small change had been taken, but not a laptop.
