Police are investigating up to four officers after they allegedly forwarded a pornographic email to an outsider, who then sent it on to 20 primary schools.
National headquarters spokesman Jon Neilson said the incident was "very embarrassing" for police and the officers involved had breached police internet regulations.
Police acted immediately after one of the schools complained yesterday, he said.
He would not say what rank the officers were or what district they came from. The investigation is expected to take at least two weeks.
