Police have downgraded an anthrax alert at a south Auckland mail centre.
Road cordons have been lifted around the mail centre in Kerrs Rd, Manukau but the building is expected to remain closed for at least the rest of today.
Up to 45 staff, who were decontaminated using a portable shower after evacuating the building just after 8 am, are being prepared for release from quarantine in an adjoining building.
A female worker who said she had picked up a white powder on her hands while sorting mail, is also awaiting release from Middlemore Hospital.
A child who was in the mail centre was taken to hospital suffering from what is believed to be asthma, but is expected to be released soon.
Police are awaiting the arrival of MAF investigators who will inspect the building.
The nature of the substance remains unknown.
