Crew and passengers of a charter boat have rescued a woman found in the water near Auckland's Princes Wharf.

She was taken to hospital in critical condition after being pulled from the water off Quay St about 4pm yesterday, a police spokeswoman said.

However, a spokeswoman for Auckland DHB said the rescued woman is now in a stable condition.

The police spokeswoman said members of the public helped get the woman out of the water and on to a boat.

A spokeswoman for Dreamweaver Charters (which also runs a service called Dolphin Planet) confirmed their vessel was involved in the incident.

"Our boat and fully trained crew assisted by some onboard passengers were the rescue team."

It's unclear how the woman came to be in the water but the Dreamweaver Charters spokeswoman said she had not been a passenger on the charter.

"Out of respect for the victim and their family and any pending investigations we prefer not to make any further comments."

Police are talking to witnesses today to find out how the woman ended up in the water.
