Two people just before midnight are the latest victims in what has been a day of carnage on New Zealand roads.

In total five people died - and two were critically injured - in vehicle crashes and two people were killed after being hit by a train.

St John ambulance confirmed two people were killed in a "traffic incident" in Kumeu at 11.45pm.

One person has died and another is in a critical condition after a two-car crash on State Highway 65 at Maruia about 9.10pm.

A three-vehicle crash in South Canterbury just after 4pm left one person dead.

A female died after three cars collided just north of Towai in Northland on Friday afternoon.

Another person is fighting for their life after a single-vehicle crash in Te Horo on the Kapiti Coast about 10.10pm.

Two pedestrians were killed after being struck by a train in Papakura about 11.10pm.
