National will select a candidate to contest Peter Dunne's Ohariu-Belmont seat in next year's election but will be ready to withdraw if Labour appears to have a chance to win it.
National will also stand in Wellington Central. Act leader Richard Prebble lost the seat to Labour last election, despite National
standing aside.
Mr Dunne, the United Future leader, used to hold Ohariu-Belmont for Labour.
National has given him a free run for the past two elections, expecting its supporters to vote for him personally but to vote National for the all-important party vote, which determines the number of seats in Parliament.
But National's management board believes the absence of candidates in two neighbouring Wellington seats has limited its ability to promote the party votes.
