Three Mongrel Mob members who ran out of petrol in the wrong neighbourhood were involved in scuffle after knocking on a rival gang member's door.
The men were returning home to Wairoa when they ran out of petrol in Raupunga over the weekend.
According to police, the Mongrel Mob members knocked on a nearby door and had an "altercation with the occupants", who happened to be Black Power associates.
Police said when the Mob members later returned to their vehicle, it had been stolen.
No complaints or charges had been laid and the vehicle was later recovered.
Raupunga, which is 35km south of Wairoa, is known Black Power territory.
The weekend altercation happened near where a car carrying four Mongrel Mob members drove off a 125m cliff into the Mohaka River in 2015.
Three men died in the crash.
