Two young sisters raped by the same man in the 1970s were still suffering emotional harm, the High Court in Christchurch was told yesterday.
John William Vine, 57, was jailed for six years by the Chief Justice, Dame Sian Elias, after being found guilty of two counts of rape.
One rape
had occurred at the boarding house where Vine lived, when he overpowered the girl and forced her to have sex.
In the other case, he forced one sister to have sex while the other implored him to stop.
The sisters said the rapes were painful, and they had felt ashamed and unable to tell their parents about them.
The younger sister suffered ongoing health problems attributable to immature sexual activity. Both had had trouble with relationships all their lives.
Defence counsel Mark Callaghan said Vine was remorseful and concerned about the harm he had done, but not all the problems the victims had suffered in life could be blamed on him.
