A hotelier who admitted two Anzac Day breaches of the Sale of Liquor Act was fined when he appeared in the Dunedin District Court.
Patrick Joseph Hickey, 53, was convicted and fined $350 for the unauthorised sale of liquor and $250 for allowing people on licensed premises out of hours. He also has to pay court costs of $130.
Prosecutor Sergeant Paul Knox said the sale of liquor was prohibited until 1pm on Anzac Day unless a special licence was obtained. He told Judge Dave Saunders that about 1.30am on Anzac Day, police conducting a licensing check found about 35 people inside the Celtic Arms, with most drinking alcohol.
Hickey said he was the manager of the premises and had forgotten to apply for a special licence.
Counsel Bernadette Farnan said Hickey recognised he should have got a special licence.

Warbirds over Wanaka
Hundreds of aviation enthusiasts turned out to see some impressive aircraft in action yesterday at a preview of the Warbirds over Wanaka show this weekend. The popular event had been grounded for the past six years, partly because of Covid pandemic restrictions. This Easter weekend it returns, with a sellout crowd of more than 60,000 people set to attend today and tomorrow. Photos / George Heard
