The admin said people who voted for colours provided some "deep and meaningful statements" about what it should be.
Several members of the community were outraged by the decision, slamming the colour choice.
"Brown is such a dull colour. So many other bright and delightful colours to pik[sic] from," one said.
"Can't say that impresses me, it's quite dull," wrote another, with one response saying: "Deal with it, Brown town is here to stay."
Group administrator Rosalie Liddle Crawford told the Bay of Plenty Times she started a two-day colour poll after Facebook posted a notification asking whether she would like to change the colour.
"It was quite a vigorous robust debate.
"Mostly people followed the group guidelines and were respectful of each other's opinions. One member posted some inappropriate comments and was muted for 24 hours.
"The debate was interesting in that people attached so much significance to what colour they think defines this community - the beach, sand, golden sunrises.
"Others used the argument that brown would help highlight the need for dog owners to scoop the poop when walking their dogs.
"There were some accompanying poo emojis."
She said the younger members of the group seemed to have the most fun with the poll.
"They staged a strong campaign around the colour brown, supporting each other's posts and using angry emojis on any posts that weren't brown."
Curiously, the original colour of the group was actually already brown, she said.
