Driver killed in head-on crash near Sanson

One man is dead after a head-on collision near Ohakea Airbase in the Manawatu last night.

Sergeant Chris Whitmore from the Feilding police said the crash occurred on State Highway 3 between Sanson township and Fagans Rd at about 11.40pm.

A white 1981 Ford Laser saloon travelling towards Sanson from Bulls collided head on with a blue Toyota Echo, police said.

The male driver of the Toyota escaped with minor injuries and was taken to Palmerston North for treatment.

The male driver of the Laser died at the scene.

Mr Whitemore said his name could not be released until his family had been contacted.

Traffic was diverted for two-and-a-half hours while police cleared the scene.

Fire appliances from Bulls and Rongotea assisted.

Police would like to speak with anyone who may have seen either of the vehicles prior to the crash, Mr Whitmore said.
