Whangarei Police are investigating the serious assault of a 53-year-old man in Otangarei on Friday night.
Police said the man was walking home about 10.30pm when he was assaulted by a group of men behind the shops on William Jones Drive between the Otangarei Marae and the Kohanga Reo.
The
man was allegedly punched and kicked and is recovering in hospital after suffering serious facial injuries.
Police arrested two men aged 16 and 17 years in relation to the assault, however believe that there were others involved.
