The Book Of Mormon set to make Australian debut

Sing Hallelujah! The Book Of Mormon is coming to Australia.

The Broadway phenomenon, written by South Park creators Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone, will open at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne in January 2017.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews made the announcement on Monday on both his Facebook and Twitter accounts.

"I'm thrilled we're bringing the most successful piece of theatre in the world today to Victoria - The Book of Mormon will open at Melbourne's Princess Theatre in early 2017," he wrote.

The Book Of Mormon has had massive success on Broadway, winning nine Tony Awards, four Olivier Awards and a Grammy in 2011.

The New York Times described it as "the best musical of this century", while The Daily Show's Jon Stewart once said it was "so good, it makes me angry".

Premiering on Broadway in 2011, the show about Mormon missionaries in Uganda, features several big song-and-dance numbers and playfully pokes fun at religion, sexuality, poverty and race.

Actor Josh Gad, best known for his role in Frozen as Olaf the snowman, was among the original cast members. He played Elder Arnold Cunningham.

The Australian production of the religious satire will be produced by Anne Garefino, Scott Rudin, Important Musicals and John Frost.
