Netflix buys that other Obama movie, Barry, at Toronto Film Festival

Netflix just bought the worldwide rights to Barry, the film about a young Barack Obama that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, according to Deadline Hollywood.

The deal comes less than a year after Southside With You, about the future president and first lady's first date, premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.

Starring unknown Aussie actor Devon Terrell as Barry circa 1981, this latest Obama project follows the would-be president during his early years as a student at Columbia University in New York.

In those years he apparently did a lot of deep reading, partying and pickup basketball. Washington Post film critic Ann Hornaday called Barry a "film about a young man grappling with unsettled relationships with his father, his future and his own identity."

"The man we see now has a swagger about him, walks around with his chest up high," Terrell said in an interview with GQ shortly after his film's premiere.

"Looking at him when he was 30, though, he was a different man. And so thinking about him at 21, when he's trying to find himself, he's not as assured."
