BAGHDAD - A US soldier and a Marine were killed in separate attacks by guerrillas in Iraq, the US army said Monday.
It said the Marine was killed in the tense area west of Baghdad Monday. The soldier was killed by a car bomb in the northern city of KirkukSunday.
The US army had earlier announced that another US soldier was also killed in a roadside bomb blast in the city of Mosul Sunday.
Marines based around the volatile Iraqi town of Falluja, 50 km (32 miles) west of Baghdad, have been involved in heavy fighting in the town since taking over control of the area from the 82nd Airborne Division in the last few weeks.
Monday, Marines blocked off exits to Falluja and closed the main Baghdad to Amman highway, which leads past the town. The US military has vowed a stern response after four US contractors were killed in the town last week and their bodies burned and mutilated by a cheering crowd.
A US military statement said the Kirkuk car bomb attack on Sunday afternoon killed a 1st Infantry Division soldier and wounded six other soldiers.
The attacks raised the number of American troops killed in action in Iraq since the invasion to 422.
