Delays were expected on the inter-island ferry Aratere after the Wellington-bound ship returned to Picton yesterday morning because of a seriously distressed horse on board.
Tranz Rail spokesman Mike Booker said that early into the journey, the ship's captain decided to turn back to Picton after a horse was found to be in great distress in its float. The horse's distress was also affecting other horses on board.
Mr Booker said he had no idea of the horse's fate.
The Aratere ran three hours behind schedule yesterday, and the delay was expected to be carried over the next two days.
