India-Pakistan border tension mounts in Kashmir

Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged small arms and machinegun fire at some places along the border on Saturday as tension mounted between the two nuclear capable neighbours, officials said yesterday.

A senior defence official said the exchange of fire along the border in the rebellion-torn Jammu and Kashmir state was not alarming.

New Delhi moved more troops to its border with its western neighbour following the deadly suicide attack on its Parliament last week and also recalled its envoy to Pakistan for what it termed Islamabad's failure to act against terrorism.

India has blamed two Pakistan-based groups for the attack in which 14 people including five militants were killed.
