Forest fires kill four in France

Several thousand people spent the night in temporary shelters after raging forest and brush fires in southeastern France killed four people and forced the evacuation of two towns.

President Jacques Chirac warned those responsible they would face "punishment of exceptional severity" as evidence emerged of arson.
