With 15,000km of coastline, Kiwis are spoilt for choice when it comes to great beaches. From white sand and still azure waters, to black sand, waves and rip currents - there's something for everyone.
I can't claim to have seen all of the beaches in this fine country, but these are my top 10*.
Bream Bay, Northland
Bream Bay is located at the southern end of Whangarei. Idyllic, with stretches of white sand and sparkling turquoise sea, this area offers something for everyone. Surfing at Ruakaka, optional clothing at Uretiti and beautiful vistas at nearby One Tree Point.
Matapouri Bay, Northland
A family favourite, Matapouri Bay is on the Tutukata Coast. There's a walkway to Whale Bay, bush trails and beautiful coastal views.
Moeraki Beach, Otago
We all know this one. It's unmistakable with hundreds of boulders - seen best at low tide. Penguins are commonly seen, as well as seals. The rich waters make this a fisherman's paradise.
Hot Water Beach, Coromandel
Mercury Bay's famous beach on the Coromandel Peninsula is a favourite for locals and tourists. The underwater hot springs bubble up at a temperature of 65C, so you can dig your own hot pool. Bring a bucket and spade, and be wary of those rip tides.
Cathedral Cove, Coromandel
One of New Zealand's most photographed scenes and it's no wonder why. This spectacular destination is in the Coromandel, near to another iconic beach - Hot Water Beach. Cathedral Cove is a marine reserve so there is much to see under the water. The cove is accessible by foot, boat or kayak - I recommend kayaking.
Tapotupotu Bay, Northland
Secluded, white sandy beach and an unspoiled coastline. We haven't ventured to this beach since having kids, but enjoyed the DOC campground pre-children. There aren't many amenities, but that's what makes this destination so special.
Punakaiki Beach, West Coast
Known for its pancake rocks and blowholes, there is much to see and do here. Coastal walks, horse treks and plenty of cafes and restaurants. Perhaps the best attribute is the ability to watch a spectacular South Island sunset from a secluded spot.
Onetangi Beach, Waiheke Island
Let's face it, Waiheke Island is beautiful - a must-see destination. Wineries, cafes, arts and crafts and, of course, this stunning stretch of tranquil water. Perfect for taking time out after a busy week in the office.
Muriwai Beach, Auckland
The gannet colony is fascinating and the birds make obliging models. Even as an amateur photographer, I've been delighted with the images I've managed to get. A contrast to the usual tranquil, white sandy beaches, Muriwai is rugged with black, sticky sand and vicious waves. A surfer's paradise and sunset-lover's dream.
Urupukapuka Island, Northland
When I arrived in New Zealand my husband (then boyfriend) took me to the Bay of Islands where we kayaked around Urupukapuka Island. It was something out of a fairy tale. Dolphins swam beneath our kayak - so close I reached out and touched one. The views were second-to-none and I had never seen such crystal clear water. This slice of heaven made me fall absolutely and truly in love with New Zealand. A love affair that's lasted the better part of a decade.
* There are so many beautiful beaches in New Zealand. I don't have the space to name them all.
